THE THIRD MAN SOUNDTRACK

I recently watched 'The Third Man' and thought that was one hell of a soundtrack!!(And the movie too!!)
It was composed by Anton Karas who played the Zither, who was a wine bar performer in Vienna. The director heard Anton play in a cafe and knew he found his composer for the film. Anton agreed to record some of his own compositions on a reel-to-reel tape machine that the director set up in the bedroom of his hotel in vienna. One of these was later to become the Harry Lime Theme and become a popular hit. Anton worked up to 14 hours a day for twelve weeks straight to make this score. The exposure made Karas an international star after the movie was released, he toured the world and played for royalty.....The success of the score also caused a surge in zither sales

CREAM OF THE CROP - BEST OF PETER GREEN'S FLEETWOOD MAC

Before Stevie Nicks there was Peter Green, he originally formed the band in 1967. He took too many drugs (LSD), toured Europe and  joined a commune and quit the band in 1970. B.B King said, "He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats".

CREAM OF THE CROP - ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN - OCEAN RAIN

I remember when I was younger, my friend had this record. The cover really caught my eye, it was very mysterious. I felt like I HAD to listen to this! Then I heard the music... then I fell in love with this record. I thought the cover was absolutely perfect for what I just heard, it fit so well with the sound; dark, blue and purple and some guys rowing in what I thought was a cave. One of the best records ever made (and record cover)!!

CREAM OF THE CROP: JULEE CRUISE 'FLOATING INTO THE NIGHT'

By-God, this record is beautiful. Floating into the Night is Julee Cruise's first album released in 1989, described mostly as 'Dream Pop'. She has recorded three albums, but is probably best known for "Falling", the theme song for the TV series, Twin Peaks (she was the Roadhouse Singer)The album was produced and all songs were written by film director, David Lynch, and composer, Angelo Badalamenti. Most of the music was originally recorded for David Lynch's made for cable TV special, "Industrial Symphony No. 1".

CREAM OF THE CROP - NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS 'FROM HER TO ETERNITY'

This is Nick Cave's first album with the Bad Seeds after the split with former band 'The Birthday Party'. Made in 1984 with Blixa Bargeld (Einstürzende Neubauten)(who Apparently achieved his sounds on this album by massaging the strings of his guitar with an electric shaver), Hugo Race(The Wreckery)Barry Adamson (Magazine)and Mick Harvey. After some studio work Cave’s new band made their first public appearance on New Years Eve 1983 in Melbourne, Australia, under the name Nick Cave - Man Or Myth?. The band then briefly called themselves Nick Cave and the Cavemen before adopting the Bad Seeds.

The album has a cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Avalanche' which he says "I never got over that thrill that someone else has chosen a song and wants to do it. I think Nick Cave’s instinct in choosing that song [Avalanche] to cover was very good because that’s just the kind of song that is made to be torn apart and I like the way he tore it apart. I like the way he went out with it."

CREAM OF THE CROP - DAVID BOWIE'S 'YOUNG AMERICANS'

It's gonna be me - David Bowie by Greased Pig

Every now and then I will post an album that I enjoy immensely, whether it inspired me, made me want to dance, made me want to sing, play the guitar or was that perfect soundtrack for a heartache.

The first Cream of the Crop post is David Bowie's 1975 soul album 'Young Americans'. It has two Bowie songs that I adore, "Win" and "It's Gonna Be Me", which wasn't released on the album until the reissue in 1991. I don't know why he didn't put it on the album in 1975, it's amazing!! (That's the SoundCloud track above)

Kirin J Callinan

Kirin J Callinan is a solo musician from Sydney, Australia and is one of the best hidden gems amongst the rubble of dirt you have yet to discover. His music is dark and mechanical like the intricate gears and cogs of a clock. His guitar surrounds the listener while his voice is deep, brave and ominously interesting with enough force to crumble down the walls of Jericho. His live shows are intense, witty and somehow delicate, and if ever given the chance to see him perform make sure you don't miss him!

You can listen and download two live performances here -

He has just released an album called 'She' which you can purchase here

Waltzing with a Shadow

I had no means of filming when I signed up for the 48hr horror film competition. A camera in a short film contest is like a bun on a burger... quite important. So my friends and I chipped in and bought an expensive camera from an electronics store with the intention of getting a refund and giving it back, thanks to their amazing 2 week return policy. Unfortunately we had to return the camera immediately after the competition was finished so we could all eat again. On that last day before giving it back, thoughts entered my lazy brain that this filming device should be used one last time. So, I decided to make a experimental short, a capricious idea filmed alone and under 15 minutes. I wanted to see if I could create something on a whim.....turned out a little daft, but as you can see, I can dance really well...
This short film is about a rosy cheeked man who prepares himself for a dream.
A dance with his long lost love, waltzing to their favorite song

THE LATE NIGHT MOVIE

'The late night movie' is a short film I made for a 48 hour horror film competition called 'Bloody valentines' that my friends and I entered. All movies had to be under 8 minutes and be filmed and edited in 2 days starting on a Friday night and ending Sunday. Each team was given a package containing a horror sub-genre , weapon, prop and line of dialogue, my sub-genre was zombie, the assigned prop was a cereal box, weapon was a hammer, and line of dialogue was
"For God's sakes, take the stairs!"
It was made in the cold cold winter of Montreal, and because of the cold, mostly filmed in my apartment
